What a serial number can and cannot tell you
A serial number encodes when the appliance was built. Your warranty runs from when you bought it. Those are different dates, and the gap matters: an appliance can sit in a warehouse or on a showroom floor for months before it is sold.
So treat the manufacture date as a floor. The warranty cannot have started earlier than that, which is useful when there is no receipt, but it is not the answer on its own. If you can find the purchase date, use it — a card statement, the retailer's order history, or the installer's invoice all work.
How the GE serial date code works
GE serial numbers open with two letters, then six digits, then a letter. The first letter is the month, the second is the year. The same letter set is reused for both.
The catch is that the year letters cycle roughly every 12 years, so one serial can point at more than one year. A serial starting "GA" was built in April of 2025, 2013, 2001, and so on.
